The technical specifications were published under ITU-T G.9700 and G.9701 and subsequently approved in April 2014. The development was coordinated with the FTTdp project (fiber to the distribution site). The name G.fast is an abbreviation for fast access to subscriber terminals; where the letter G represents a number of ITU-T G. recommendations. The demo-proof hardware was demonstrated in mid-2013. The first chipsets were introduced in October 2014, with commercial hardware introduced in 2015, and the first installation was launched in 2016.
